All civil aircraft operating internationally (across national borders) will be required to be equipped with a 406 MHz ELT as of 1 July 2008. For existing aircraft this can be as simple as portable device not attached to the aircraft and not automatically activated. New aircraft must have an automatic fixed 406 ELT.
